WHAT TO PACK When packing for your trip, your most important item on a cruise will be rain gear. A rain jacket and hat are essentials. Also bring sunglasses and sunblock. No matter what month you’re visiting Alaska, it’s a good idea to pack to dress in layers. Top a couple of light layers with a warm sweater or jacket for the cool evenings and bring a warm hat and pair of gloves. If you’re traveling on a luxury liner, you may have a dress code in the evenings. Most large ships are casual during the day and in the evening range from casual to formal. On casual evenings, shirts, slacks, and dresses are a good bet. For more formal evenings, women often wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses while men dress in dinner jackets or suits. The clothing recommendations vary so check the dress code of your ship before packing. Also, if your ship has a pool or hot tub, a swimsuit is essential. Don’t forget binoculars, a camera, and lots of film. There will be numerous picture opportunities ranging from gorgeous shorelines to massive glaciers, and don’t forget the wide variety of wildlife. You may cross paths with otters, dolphins, whales, birds, and other animals so be poised to take pictures. Many cruises offer shore excursions so you will need good footwear. Depending on the type of excursion, you may need hiking boots that provide the needed ankle support on the trails. If you’re planning on doing any hiking or backpacking in the interior, make sure you take insect repellent with you. Summer is the worst time for mosquitoes in Alaska and they will be out in full force. Depending on your itinerary, if you’re leaving from a Canadian port, you’ll have to clear customs on your way into Canada so don’t forget your passport. Pack any medications you may need, especially since you won’t be able to get anything but the basics on your ship. If you’re prone to seasickness, it may be a good idea to bring an over-the-counter medication, wrist bands, or a natural remedy such as ginger tablets. Most importantly, don’t forget your tickets! |
