LARGE OR SMALL VESSELS? Over 13 cruise lines operate in Alaska and offer over 30 ships to take passengers adventuring on Alaska’s waters. The ships range in size from smaller ships carrying 75 to 100 passengers to large ships that can carry over 1,500 people. The different boats offer varying experiences and you should take these differences into account when booking your trip. The large lines have more amenities and variety in dining and entertainment whereas the smaller ships are more casual and offer a more personal cruise, as well as greater opportunities too see the scenery and wildlife. The large ships are often a “floating community.” There are stores, theatres, fitness facilities and daycares. They offer a high level of comfort and entertainment options. Because these are large ships, the wildlife and wilderness are often seen at a distance; large ships have to stay farther back from glaciers and shorelines than smaller vessels. Large vessels are fast, however, and allow you to see much of the shoreline. The service on these ships is excellent, and most have a naturalist on board who gives presentations on the passing scenery. In an effort to provide a comfortable vacation, these large vessels often have nightclubs, casinos, and spas for passengers to enjoy. You’ll also be well fed on a large cruise liner. There are often several restaurants offering exquisite cuisine throughout the day. Many restaurants offer fine dining with formal dress in the evenings. So if you’re looking to be pampered and fed while you enjoy the beautiful scenery, choose a large cruise ship. Smaller vessels focus more on the beauty and wildlife of Alaska. The smaller ships are able to navigate through fjords and get closer to wildlife and glaciers than the large ships can. These intimate ships offer nature views and cultural activities and are a good choice if you want to see Alaska’s wilderness and wildlife as close as you can. Smaller ships have decks that are closer to the water and provide a better view of the otters, whales, and dolphins swimming by. Whichever type of ship you choose, remember to choose carefully since this decision will impact how you see Alaska. |
